More information : ST 8573 6291 (FCE) A rapid examination of air photography (1a) suggests the presence of a probable double round barrow site, of Prehistoric or Roman date, visible as possibly two joined ring ditch cropmarks southwest of Great Chalfield. (1)
Two conjoined Bronze Age round barrows are visible as cropmarks on air photographs, at ST 8573 6294. The easternmost barrow measures approximately 19.6m in diameter and is formed by a complete circuit of ditch. The second barrow appends to the western side of the first and measures approximately 16m in diameter. The feature appears to have been cut by an Iron Age/Roman field boundary (UID 1578520). (2) |
