More information : The possible remains of several buildings are visible within the south part of the precinct of Furness Abbey (SD 27 SW 12) outside the area occupied by the claustral buildings.
A possible building platform at SD 2189 7154 stands at the foot of a slope near the lower end of a track, with a slight stone rickle along its downhill side.
A rectangular platform at SD 2196 7151 lies on the edge of a quarry and blocks a trackway. This platform may be a building stance but it has an unusual feature in the form of a gully, 0.5 m wide and 0.05 m deep, at the base of its backscarp.
A group of building platforms clusters around SD 2205 7165 on the north side of a track which may represent the pre-railway alignment of Manor Road. A possible back lane runs behind these buildings which are rectangular and clear but of very low relief, none of the scarps being more than 0.2 m high. On the steep slope behind these buildings are three boundary banks with slight ditches, much abraded or covered by hillwash, standing no more than 0.2 m high. (1) |
