Summary : Canal linking the Rivers Severn and Thames, consisting of two canals, the seven-mile long Stroudwater Navigation running from theSevern to Stroud, and the Thames and Severn Canal running from Stroud to Lechlade. Authorised by an act of 1783 it was opened in 1789 and abandoned in 1927-33. The Canal is undergoing restoration in the early 21st century. The canal bank which carried the towpath for the canal is visible as an earthwork on air photographs taken in 1947. The canal bank can be seen in three sections between Saul Junction and Stonehouse.
More information : See linear file. (1)

As part of the plan to reopen the canal, an extensive survey of the canal and its associated elements was undertaken in 2003. (2)

The canal bank which carried the towpath for the canal referred to above (1) is visible as an earthwork on air photographs taken in 1947. The bank measures up to19m in width and is situated on the south side of the canal. The canal bank can be seen in three sections between Sual Junction at SO 7569 0924 and Stonehouse at SO 7920 0532. The section of bank between the A38 at SO 7737 0732 and Chipmans Platt at SO 7797 0625 was levelled by 1971. This part of the canal was removed by this time to make way for the M5 motorway and improvements to the A419 and A38. (3-5)

SO 7506 1022 A 400 metre section of the Stroudwater Navigation was mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1946. Opened in 1779, this section of the canal was still visible in 1970 although it had fallen into disuse by the 1950s. Approximately 400 metres long and 8 metres wide, this length of the canal runs from the canal bridge and lock at the canal basin (SO 7510 1042) to Saul bridge (SO 7507 1002). (6-9)
