Trial excavations by Bellhouse were negative, and the site may have eroded. (2-3)
In 1954 Bellhouse dug trenches at this location but failed to find any remains. After the discovery of tower 12b Bellhouse felt better able to estimate the position of the milefortlet at NY 0996 5110, but the only evidence he found here was the presence of an indurated soil horizon, similar to the one he had found in association with milefortlet 15 (see authority 2a). The results of the geophysical survey done in January 1994, centred at NY 0993 5109, were inconclusive, and the precise position of this milefortlet remains unknown (4a). There is nothing visible on the ground, the field having been cultivated since Bellhouse examined it, and the farmer had seen nothing unusual during ploughing. (4)
