More information : SX 423686: The gardens at Cotehele House, date from the 16th century and cover an area of 4.8ha. After the 1862 restoration of the house the present outline of the gardens was formed with three formal gardens placed to the east of the house and a valley garden with a dovecote (SX 46 NW 7) and a pool and a summer house constructed. Other features include a bowling green situated south of the house, an orchard to the south and southwest and the upper garden, comprising of a meadow, lawn and pool. (1)
The park was first developed as two deer parks during the late 15th century by Sir Richard Edgcumbe or in the early 16th century by Sir Piers Edgcumbe.The parks had been disparked by 1731. The present park was developed in the late 18th century and mid 19th century. The formal gardens have 16th century origins and were improved from 1861 by Caroline Augusta Edgcumbe. The woodland garden was planted during the 20th century. (2) |
