Summary : Charter House is a 16th century remodelling of a building, probably the prior's lodging, which was formerly part of St Anne's Carthusian Monastery. |
More information : SP 3447 7823 (GCE) St Anne's Charterhouse House. The former Carthusian Monastery was dissolved in 1539 and by the early 1540s had passed into private hands. While a considerable amount of demolition is known to have taken place at this date a large three storey building was retained. Though converted into a private dwelling it retains many monastic features including late medieval or early post- medieval wall paintings. The house remained in private hands until 1940 when it was given to Coventry City. It is currently used as a council training centre. Other buildings were added during its use as private house the most notable of which are a probable eighteenth century coachhouse in the southwest corner of the garden and a ruined nineteenth century gazebo in the southeast corner. The above description is summarised from a detailed RCHME level 3 survey carried out in October 1991. The results of the survey are held in the NMR. (1) |
