Westminster Friary Of Pied Friars

Hob Uid: 966945
Location :
Greater London Authority
City of Westminster
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TQ3040080600
Summary : The Priory of Friars of St Mary de Areno was founded in 1267 by William Arnaud, a knight of Henry III, and it became extinct upon the death of the last brother, Hugh of York, in 1317. The London and Westminster friaries appear to be the same friary.
More information : (TQ 304806). Approximate site of the house of the Pied Friars (1). Locates it as adjacent to Exeter (Burleigh) House (38 SW 46- TQ 30528083). This conflicts with the location in Tanner (2) as further west near Durham House (38 SE 359 - TQ 30388056). Reference (3) makes it clear that the two names were of the same order. (1-3)
