Summary : A fragment of an inscribed Roman tombstone was found in Maiden Lane in 1842.
More information : (TQ 3083. Roman tombstone sited to Maiden Bridge Lane and Battle Bridge Lane from OS 25" 1916 and OS 2500 1979).

Fragment of tombstone, 14 inches by 12 inches. It reads:

"[Sat]urni [ ], mil(iti) leg(ionis) XX [v(aleriae) v(ictris)] C. Aci[lius] M..."

("[In memory of] Saturnious, private in the Twentieth Valerion Victorious Legion, [set up by] Gaius Acilius M. [his heir ?]").

Found in 1842 on the east side of Maiden Lane, Battle Bridge. (1)

It was found built into a cottage on the east side of Maiden Lane, and was part of a tomb which had been dug up in a field on the west side of the road leading to the Caledonian Asylum. (2)
