More information : (Centred at NY 1750 5993) A Roman pyre cremation "A" found in 1954 exposed in a natural sandpit 100 yards north of mile-fortlet 4 (NY 15 NE 7). Associated with the bones, which were probably from one corpse, were sherds of Roman pottery, including fragments of a mortarium and an amphora, and iron objects including nails and two pieces of a sword blade or spearhead. Traces of two other cremations were found at B and C, this must therefore be a Roman cremation site associated with the mile-fortlet, similar to that at Beckfoot (NY 04 NE 1). (1)
According to the finder, Mr R. L. Bellhouse (2a), the remains of the cremations were all found in a disturbed state in the base of a pit created by sand blow. Due to the disturbance, the number of burials could not be assessed. The find spot was pointed out on the ground in the general area of NY 1750 5994 by Mr Bellhouse; no further traces of cremations were found. (2)
