More information : (NY 1746 5985) Fortlet 4 (GS) site of (1)
(NY 1746 5983 sited from plan (3)) Milefortlet No 4 was located by Simpson & Hodgson in 1945 by the finding of turfwork c 100 yards SE (sic Plan (2) shows SSW of Trig AO/LP/64/90). (NY 1749 5996) (4) on Herd Hill. See also AO/LP/64/163 (3). Only the North side and NW corner appear to have been located according to plan (2). Bellhouse however shows the complete plan in 1954 without any comment (3). (2-4)
The site occurs on the edge of the higher ground overlooking the lower ground to seaward. There are no surface indications of the mile-fortlet. (5)
Ferguson, who searched for a Tower on Herd Hill in 1880, with an augur, found nothing. He states that here was a look out for herdsmen, prior to enclosure. (6)

There are no visible remains of this milefortlet at or near the position shown on OS 25-inch map of 1970. Geophysical survey of the site was undertaken in January 1994 (7b) and the precise position of the milefortlet was located to NY 1744 5985 at the seaward edge of a low ridge parallel to the sea. Geophysical plots held in NMR archive. (7)
