Pleasure grounds (circa 42ha) first developed circa 1750 by William Aislabie with some additions in the mid-C19th. There was no residence but a Banqueting House with separate servants hall was at Mowbray Point. Grounds laid out in naturalistic manner on slope of a deep gorge cut by the River Ure. Banqueting Hall and Mowbray Castle, an eyecatcher, are sited on the edge. Natural central axis is provided by Grewelthorpe Beck, at the top of which are four masonry dams, pre-1845. Below these are a chain of cascades, artificial in places, pre-1806. Alum Spring with petrifying waters and masonry base of covered seat both pre-1806. At foot of axis is a knoll on which Fishers Hall, an octagonal pavilion dated 1750 stands. Below Mowbray point, about half way down the gorge is a platform on which Fountain Pond with rockwork island and Rustic Temple stand. To the south of the platform is a grotto and a largely artificial Forty Foot Cascade. All mentioned in 1806 but probably much earlier. These and other features are connected by a system of winding paths. (1) |
