Summary : Conjectured site of vicus of Bewcastle Roman fort, suggested by the occurence of building stones and the local topography.
More information : Bewcastle Roman fort (see NY 57 SE 15) and its environs were surveyed by RCHME in 1984-5. Building stones were recorded along the access road to Demesne Farm just N of the line of the wall of the fort and a few more were found 50m to the N of the farm gate. These could represent traces of a vicus. The topography restricts the possible position of any vicus to this relatively level area N of the fort and the narrow shelf to the W. Full survey information is available in the NMR archive. (1) The results of the RCHME survey have been published. (2)
