Wilsford 50 (Goddard)

Hob Uid: 943485
Location :
Wiltshire
Wilsford cum Lake
Grid Ref : SU1106540069
Summary : A Bronze Age bell barrow, listed by Grinsell as Wilsford 50, and part of the Lake Group of barrows recorded as SU 14 SW 51. Excavated in the early 19th century by the Reverend E Duke, who apparently found a cremation, a bronze dagger and four bone objects in a wooden box, though these might be from Wilsford 49 (SU 14 SW 472); instead, the rich finds described by Colt Hoare might have been from this barrow. The barrow is extant as an earthwork mound up to 4.2 metres high. Traces of the surrounding ditch have been almost obliterated by ploughing, though the inner lip is still discernible and it may be visible on aerial photographs.
More information : `O' - SU 11074007; Wilsford 50, a bell barrow in which the berm and ditch may have been largely obliterated, overall diameter 156ft. Colt Hoare' barrow 19. (1)

Wilsford 50, a bell barrow with a maximum height of 3.3m. The ditch has been obliterated by ploughing. Published 1:2500 survey revised. (2)

There is uncertainty over the contents of this barrow. Goddard states this barrow contained a cremation with a bronze dagger and four bone objects contained within a wooden box, which were the result of Rev. E. Duke's excavations (Barrow ?4) in 1805 (3). Grinsell (1) has not attempted to correlate Duke's barrow numbers. Finds listed in the Devizes Museum Catalogue including a bronze awl, two miniature vessels, four gold discs, amber beads and two amber pendants could have also come from this barrow or from either Wilsford 47 (SU 14 SW 470) or Wilsford 49 (SU 14 SW 472). (4) Additional reference. (5)

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and a trace of the surrounding ditch may be visible on RAF photographs taken in the early 1950s. The barrow has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (6-8)

This bell barrow marks the SW extremity of the group. It has suffered plough damage to the surrounding ditch but its inner lip is still discernible, separated from the mound by a berm; the mound is up to 4.2m high from the E. Colt Hoare suggests that the finds recovered from this barrow by Duke were unusually rich but this remains uncertain. (9)
