Wilsford 48 (Goddard)

Hob Uid: 943473
Location :
Wiltshire
Wilsford cum Lake
Grid Ref : SU1104040152
Summary : Bronze Age bell or bowl barrow, listed by Grinsell as Wilsford 48, and part of the Lake Group of barrows recorded as SU 14 SW 51. Excavated in the early 19th century by Reverend E Duke, there is some confusion over correlating various numbering schemes, but it seems to have contained a primary cremation with a bronze dagger and a boar's tusk. The barrow is extant as an earthwork mound 5.0 metres high, though the surrounding ditch has been all but levelled by the plough; this is an exceptionally tall barrow mound for its diameter of 25.6m maximum.
More information : `M' - SU 11044015, Wilsford 48, a bell barrow with an overall diameter of 168ft. Grinsell has correlated this barrow to Colt Hoare's barrow 17 which contained a cremation with a dagger within an oblaong cist. (1)

Wilsford 48, this 3.7m high barrow has been cut into by ploughing and has the apprearance of a bowl barrow with a surrounding fringe slope. Published 1:2500 survey revised. (2)

There is confusion over the correlation of this barrow to Colt Hoare's and the Rev. E. Duke's barrow numbers. Grinsell (1) has correlated it to Colt Hoare's barrow 17 (Dukes barrow no. 3). Goddard (3) to Colt Hoare's 18 (Dukes barrow no. 2) which contained a cremation with a dagger and a boar's tusk. (3-4)

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and a trace of the surrounding ditch may be visible on RAF photographs taken in the early 1950s. The barrow has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (5-7)

The ditch of this bell barrow has been all but levvelled by the plough but its inner lip can be distinguished around part of the circuit; it is separated from the mound by a berm. The mound is 25.6m in diameter maximum but up to 5.0m high, an exceptionally tall mound for its diameter. (8)
