More information : `G' - SU 10954024; Wilsford 44, a ditched bowl barrow 90ft in diameter and 6ft high. The barrow was described by Colt Hoare (Barrow 9) as a bell barrow and it is possible that the original shape has been overspread. Colt Hoare's excavations located a cremation. (1-2)
Wilsford 44; a bowl barrow 1.9m high, nothing can be seen of the ditch. Published 1:2500 survey revised. (3)
Originally recorded as Wilsford 44 by Goddard. (4)
Additional reference. (5)
The barrow falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. It has been included on the survey maps, but is covered by trees, and no further information could be added from aerial photographic evidence. (6)
The profile of this barrow mound, with a distinct capping on top of the main mound, suggests at least two phases of building; the overall height is 1.5m. The surrounding ditch is about 3.8m wide and up to 0.2m deep. This barrow is adjacent to Wilsford 45 and from its relationship to the ditch of that barrow appears to be later. (7)
