Summary : Bronze Age disc barrow, listed by Grinsell as Wilsford 3, and part of the Normanton Down group recorded as SU 14 SW 437. Excavated in the early 19th century by Colt Hoare, who found a primary cremation with 6 shale, 11 amber and 2 faience beads. The beads are in Devizes Museum. The barrow survives as an earthwork with an overall diameter of circa 60 metres, and is visible on aerial photographs. Evidence of a 20th century druid cremation has also been recovered from the barrow.
More information : `A' - SU 11554130; Wilsford 3, a disc barrow with an overall diameter of 199ft and an extremely good example of its type. Wessex grave 73. (1). Excavations by Colt Hoare (Barrow 160) located a primary cremation with shale, amber and faience beads (DM 1047-9). (2-3). Wilsford 3, a disc barrow. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (4) Originally recorded as Wilsford 3 by Goddard. (5) The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (7-8)
