More information : SJ 4172 6948 (FCE). An undated enclosure survives as a very slight earthwork on former heathland which is now improved pasture. The enclosure is rectangular with rounded corners, and consists of a ditch with traces of both an internal and external bank. A trench was dug across the ditch in 1987; no finds were recovered but the excavator postulated a Roman military context for the site (1a). There is no field evidence to support such a suggestion: no entrance diagnostic of Roman military work survives, and the presence of an external bank is very uncommon in such contexts. The feature is more likely to be associated with post-Roman heathland management.
Surveyed at 1:1250 as part of RCHME's Roman Camps Project, but discounted as a Roman camp. See plans and descriptive text held in NMR. (1) |
