More information : SK 3240 3420 - SK 3250 3430. Rykneld Street, Roman road W of Littleover. (a)
Ryknield Street passes "through the grounds of the Derby Crest Motel - here an agger can clearly be seen lying immediately to the east of the motel driveway into Chain Lane...". (b)
From Brassington's (b) description the agger would be situated at SK 3257 3425 instead of the scheduling grid reference which is too far north of the motel driveway and also well off the accepted alignment of Ryknild Street. (1)
SK 325342. A section of Rykneld Street Roman road at Littleover. The earthwork remains of a raised embankment are thought to represent medieval headland and field boundary. The buried remains of the road lie slightly to the east and include drainage features and construction pits flanked by shallow boundary ditches. These form part of the Roman road which ran between Wall, near Lichfield, and the fort at Little Chester and was probably constructed during the mid first century AD. Scheduled. (2) |
