Summary : Linear earthwork, part of a LBA/IA ditch complex centred on and to the south of Sidbury Hillfort |
More information : Ditch (NR) Ditch (NR) course of (TI) SU 21274945 - SU 21374983 Ditch (NR) (1)
A linear earthwork recorded by Colt Hoare and Grinsell (2-3). It is a continous linear feature consisting of a ditch up to 0.6m deep flanked by shallow spread banks of upcast. It is in good condition across the army ranges apart from minor mutilations but in the farmland to the south it has been ploughed out although it is still visible as a soilmark. The APs also suggest that the ditch overlies an extensive field system. Published 1:2500 survey revised. (4-5)
This linear earthwork was originally interpreted by the OS as the northern extension of the linear now known as the Brigmerston Down Linear (SU 24 NW 53). It was included within the Wessex Linear Ditches Project and forms the western boundary of a territory defined to the east by SU 24 NW 146. It can be traced almost as far north as the termination of the Sidbury Double Linear Ditch (SU 25 SW 166). The ditch was not excavated therefore it cannot be assigned to a specific phase within the evolution of the territories south of Sidbury Hillfort (SU 25 SW 37). Excavations on Sidbury Double Ditch (LDP 101) located the truncated remains of an early ditch on the line of this ditch, which continued along the western scarp of Sidbury Hill eventually following the line subsequently taken by the double ditch (SU 25 SW 166). This implies that this earthwork is a refurbished boundary rather than a new development associated with the expansion of the Northern Core Territory. (6)
