Summary : FRENCH CARGO VESSEL, 1895
More information : `About 3 o'clock on Thursday morning a farmer named Strick, residing
on the borders of Boskenna bay, between Penberth and Lamorna, was
aroused by a grating sound, and soon afterwards saw through thick fog
that a vessel had run on the rocks. He ran to advise the Coastguard,
but the weather was calm, and it was not necessary to use the rocket
apparatus to get the crew off. Her crew remained on board throughout
the day, although divers reported her bottom pierced in several
places...vessel is full of water, lying in 16 foot forward and 25
foot aft at high water . . an agreement has been made with the
Neptune Salvage Co for 5,000 to float the steamer and take her into
Falmouth...the steamer BELOS is here awaiting a fine day to
commence...the weather is still too bad for the salvage steamer to
go to her...all hope has been abandoned of refloating her, and the
company are saving the stores and materials...April 01, captain and
owners have abandoned her.'(1)(2)

`...ashore on the coast 5 miles west of Penzance, 3 feet of water in ship...stern under water, all crew saved...vessel about 200 yards from the shore...Endeavours are being made to refloat the SAINTONAGE. A little of her cargo has washed off the deck...cargo worked out of the holds...about 20 tons washed ashore...' (4-9)
