More information : SK 1509 8404 medieval borough of Castleton. In documents of 1196 there is mention of four marks paid `de cremento burgi de Alto Pech' (High Peak) (1a). Documents of 1255 show that there were 43 5/8ths burgages (1b) (1). Recorded as castellum Willelmi peuerel in the Domeday Book (2a) and Castelton in 1300 from the Derbyshire Charters (2b). The name comes from `Tun - by the castle' (2)
