At Southgate a new surface water trench cut through a masonry wall 0.5m thick (no date given). The wall was constructed of faced limestone blocks and was seen to return in the west section for a distance of 2.5 metres. This is likely to be part of the east guardroom of the Southgate. (1)
Reinterpretation of excavations by J Holmes in 1960 indicate that the masonry wall found by Down (undated) may be the west guard-room of the Roman Southgate. The medieval gate apparently lay to the west of its Roman precursor. (2) |
