Summary : Fragment of was discovered, probably indicative of site of the North Gate of the Roman, and Mediaeval, city wall, recorded in building work. Documentary sources indicate that the upper storey of the gate contained a Chapel dedicated to St Mary. The gate was demolished in 1772.

Excavations for a petrol storage tank on the east side of northgate between 1958 and 1960 under a garage forecourt exposed remains of stone walling which Dr A E Wilson concluded was the south-east corner of the Roman gate tower, adjoining the remains of the Roman wall on the East side of the Roman North gate. (1)

Additional references. In 1374 there is a reference to the Chapel of St Mary, or our Lady, upon North Gate which was in the upper storey of the gate. Speed's map of 1610 shows an upper storey to the Gate which may represent the secularised fabric of this chapel.(2-4)
