Bishop Herbert Losinga founded a Benedictine Priory at Norwich in 1096. The monastic buildings were ready for occupation by 60 monks in 1101. There were 50 monks in 1381 but by 1538-9 the figure seems to be 31. It was dissolved on 6.4.1539, when a secular establishment was formed, the last prior becoming dean. (2)

The site of the Close was established in the 1080s and 1090s and forms a pair with the castle (TG 20 NW 22), the two sites between them obliterating the Saxon city. Bishop Losinga bought the land in 1094 from the King and the City and commenced building immediately. The close was walled (TG 20 NW 337) to meet the demands of security and monastic life. Part of the cathedral (TG 20 NW 1) was ready for use in 1101 when the monastery was dedicated.

Losinga was succeeded by Eborad and by the time of his retirement in 1145 a complete set of monastic buildings had been established.(See TG 20 NW 337-TG 20 NW 363 for details). (3)
