Grimsby

Hob Uid: 922691
Location :
North East Lincolnshire
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TA2704009310
Summary : Medieval borough, mentioned in documents dated 1194, 1201, 1202 and 1207. Grimsby was protected by earthen defences of post conquest date.
More information : TA 2704 0931. Medieval borough of Grimsby.

In a document dated 1194, burgesses of Grimsby were mentioned (a). In both 1201 and 1207, charters of King John were granted to Grimsby, that of 1207 mentioning the king's court of burgesses (b). In 1202, the borough was represented by its own jury at the eyre (a court of itinerant justices who travelled in circuit) (c). (1-2)

The Pipe Rolls for 1200 document a payment of £80 to Ralph of Bradley and others for the construction of a castle. In 1201 Ralph paid a large sum to be quit of his responsibility, and in 1203 the sheriff of Lincolnshire returned £49-17s-10d to the Exchequer. The return of such a large sum suggests that the works, if ever started, were never completed, and this is confirmed by the fact that some years later a local lord paid 28 marks for all the stone and lime with which the King had proposed to build a castle.
