`...a report was received here at Plymouth this afternoon (April 8)
that a small steamer, two masts, funnel aft, was seen to capsize west
of Rame Head. The lifeboat, in tow of a tug and a steam pilot cutter
proceeded in search, and are still searching...lifeboat and tug
returned with mate and cook of the steamer UNICORN, remainder of crew
missing. They report bad weather on passage, and were making for
Plymouth when the steamer foundered in about 15 fathoms of water... the steamer was observed to upend and sink immediately about 3.30pm yesterday...two men were seen to leave in a small boat, rescued by dockyard tug; presumed remainder of crew drowned.' (2)(5)

An ex-fishing trawler, sank in heavy seas about 3 miles offshore. (4)

The wreck is believed to be the UNICORN due to her cargo of tiles.
The iron and steel hull stands 5m proud in 49m and is 100ft long with
a beam of between 20 and 25 ft. She lies in a NE/SW direction with
the bows NE. She appears broken up on a sand and mud bottom. (1)

Small steamer, 2 masts, a funnel aft was seen to capsize west of Rame Head in 15 fathoms with the loss of three crew, 2 were rescued, reportedly registered at Milford .(6)

Sources (1) and (5) give gross tonnage as 134.

Source (4) gives voyage as Bridgwater to Jersey.

Source (5) gives place of loss as 3 miles SSW of Rame Head, and source (4) as 3 miles SW of Rame Head.
