Summary : Two areas of prehistoric cord-rig cultivation are visible on aerial photographs within the area of survey at Haltwhistle Burn. The first ('A'), at NY 7150 6626, within the SE corner of camp 1 (NY 76 NW 13), cannot be identified on the ground, but the second ('B'), at NY 7164 6628, to the S of camp 2 (NY 76 NW 12) is clearly visible and well preserved. From examination of the AP, the cord-rig (A) occupies approximately 0.11 hectares (0.28 acres) of a ridge summit and is orientated N-S. It may originally have extended further to the E and S but this is uncertain. The cord-rig (B) is situated on a low rounded knoll between marshy areas to the S, E and W and an early modern grass track to the N. As seen on aerial photographs the rig covers an area of 0.23 hectares (0.56 acres): a little over half of it is visible on the ground. The furrows are from 0.9 m -1.6 m apart and up to 0.1 m deep, and orientated E-W. Surveyed at 1:1000, October 1984. Full information is included in the NMR Archive. |

The extent of cord rig was mapped from aerial photography (source 1a) at a scale of 1:10000 as part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site Mapping Project. Cord rig at 'A' appears to have extended outside the camp, and to the east of the road into area centred on NY 7158 6620. Cord rig at 'B' appears more extensive, up to 2.7ha., visible to the south and east of camp2. (2)
