More information : (TA 2746 3722) Diver heavy anti aircraft battery.
This `Diver' gun battery was one of a series constructed later in the war to counter the specific threat presented by the V1 flying bomb. This battery consisted of four guns in a straight line, rather than the usual `V' formation of standard anti aircraft batteries. This was intended to allow the battery to put up a blanket of fire in front of the bombs. The battery was positioned on the clifftop to the east of the Ringbrough battery, the emplacements themselves were built from re-inforced concrete. Near the battery was a camp of nissen huts for the personnel, these were constructed from corregated material, wood and brick. The site was plotted from aerial photographs dated 1945, it was also visited by the Fortress Studies Group in 1992. They found the site to be totally destroyed by the effects of coastal erosion. The monument is also visible as upstanding structures on air photographs examined as part of the Rapid Coastal Assessment Survey of the Yorkshire and Humber Estuary. Due to coastal erosion a conspicuous part of the monument no longer survives in situ. (same source as 1a)
