Location :
Cumbria
Allerdale
Crosscanonby
Grid Ref : NY0702040380
Summary : The buried remains of Swarthy Hill north tower 20B, part of the Roman frontier defences along the Cumbrian coast. The tower was originally of sandstone construction and is located on the shoulder of Swarthy Hill.
More information : [NY 0702 4037]. The site of Roman signal tower 20b on the north shoulder of Swarthy Hill, 20 feet from the cliff edge, partially excavated in 1962. The foundations were 21 feet by 22 feet, the north east corner being destroyed by ploughing. A single sherd of a hand fired cooking pot was the only evidence of occupation. (1-2)

There are no remains of antiquity nor evidence of excavation in the area of the plough, but the farmer confirmed the siting of Authy 1 "to a few yards". (3)

(NY 0701 4041) ROMAN TOWER 20B [R] (site of) [NAT] (4)

(NY 0701 4041) Roman signal tower No 20b, scheduled. (5)

The site of tower 20b, surveyed by authority 3 at 1:2500 scale at NY 0701 4038, was verified by Mr Heatherington, farmer at Blue Dial since before the excavation, who pointed out from the farm (c 500m away) the site of the excavation on a vague natural terrace on the NE-facing slopes of Swarthy Hill. The latest surveyed position agrees with that of authority 3's site was transposed incorrectly onto the OS 1: 10000 map. (6)

Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (7)
