Menethorpe

Hob Uid: 909066
Location :
North Yorkshire
Ryedale
Burythorpe
Grid Ref : SE7708067600
Summary : Medieval village mentioned in Domesday. Signs of desertion in the form of abandoned crofts and buildings and other features surviving as cropmarks and earthworks.
More information : SE 7690 6785. There were two rows of buildings still surviving in
1775 on Jeffery's map, and one still survived in 1851. The site was
finally cleared to form a park around the hall. The existing
earthworks mirror the buildings which existed in 1851. The village
is mentioned as `Mennistorp' in the Domesday Book. (1-1a)

The Medieval earthworks described by authority 1 were mapped
from poor quality air photographs. To the south of the modern east-
west road are about twelve conjoined enclosures on average 40m by
15m. These may be crofts. Within one of these crofts is a square
enclosure, 10m by 10m, centred at SE 7679 6759. Some of the croft
boundaries extend to become field boundaries, but are only visible
as cropmarks.

To the north of the road a number of perpendicular earthwork banks,
extending from SE 7673 6774 to SE 7693 6771 indicate property
boundaries some of which form enclosures. Within one of these at
SE 7694 6769 is a rectangular building (11m by 5m). Another
enclosure contains four incomplete rectangular enclosures which
could be buildings (SE 7681 6770).

Part of the village field system can be seen in the form of ridge
and furrow (SE 7685 6780), lynchets (SE 7708 6760) and field
boundaries (SE 7716 6764) all surviving as earthworks. A number of
hollow ways extending from SE 7657 6774 to SE 7656 6791 appear in
some places to cut the ridge and furrow and in others to respect it.
Therefore, some may be Post Medieval. (Morph NoS HH.112.1.1-15)
