More information : (SX96828801) St Margaret's Church [NAT] (1)
Church of St Margaret. C14th tower, the rest rebuilt in 1874-6 by Edward Ashworth. Four-bay nave with aisles, chancel and transpets. Norman font. Grade C. (2,3)
The font is an incipient pedestal bowl type, the bowl carved in late Norman style but the shaft is too thick to be classed as a true pedestal. The moulding between neck and shaft is a simple roll-moulding. The main feature of the bowl is a dragon holding a round object in its mouth, similar to that on the font at St Kea, Cornwall, and the tympanum at Eglasberry, also in Cornwall. (4) |
