More information : [NY 0382 3742] Roman Building [GS] (site of) (1)
On 29th Sept. 1880 an altar 10" x 4" with an incised figure, was taken out of the hilltop just above the quarry, at the probable site of a building. (2)
The altar is No. 22 in the Netherhall Collection (in summerhouse). (3)
A large building, too ruinous to be intelligible stood west of the fort [NY 03 NW 13] on the edge of the cliff. (4)
The area around NY 038 374 was investigated by RCHME during the course of a detailed survey of the Roman fort at Maryport in 1992-3. The remains were not located during fieldwork; it seems likely that they have been destroyed by quarrying or cliff erosion. Full RCHME survey information is available in the NMR archive. (5) |
