Summary : The possible site of Roman tower T21A, now occupied by a disused gravel pit. Part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall along the Cumbrian coast.
More information : [NY 0639 3960] Roman signal tower No 21A. (1) Foundations similar to those of tower 15A were said to have been destroyed "at Crosscanonby road-end just before the war". This information was supplied by a Mawbray sand-pit worker who viewed the excavation in 1954 at Bank Mill (NY 04 NE 11). (2) (NY 0639 3960) Roman signal tower No 21a, scheduled. (3) Bellhouse's grid reference, obtained by precise measurement only is doubtful; such precision cannot be assumed along the Roman frontier. At his approximate position is a disused and overgrown quarry, with no trace of a tower in the vicinity. Located to the general area NY 063 396. (4) Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's wall 2010. (5)
