Hob Uid: 895253
Location :
Coventry
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : SP3300079000
Summary : Possible location of 10th century nunnery, destroyed 1016.
More information : (SP 3379) St Osburg's Nunnery (sited to Coventry from authy. I and OS 1:10000 1977)

There is a persistent tradition, which dates back to at least the C14th, that a nunnery was founded in Coventry in the late C10th by St Osburg, its abbess, and that Earl Leofric and Godiva used the site of the nunnery to found their own monastery, later St Mary's Priory, (SP37NW47). The nunnery is said to have been destroyed by Viking raiders in 1016. (1)

Excavations on the site of the Priory church from 1965-70 showed that the Medieval builders levelled the site to bedrock so that no earlier remains existed. (2)
