Summary : Camber Bastion, built circa 1680, partly demolished in 1865. From the early 18th century it served as the town magazine. Recent limited excavations showed it to remain to a height of 2 metres, and the footings of the magazine were recorded, but destroyed during development.
More information : (SZ63129941. Camber Bastion sited from OS 2500 1966 and Auth 1) The Camber Bastion was built ca.1680 as part of de Gomne's development of the Portsmouth defences. By the middle C18th it was used for the garrison magazine and then as the garrison `out-pensioner's' establishment in the C19th. By 1865, the South and East areas of the bastion had been filled in and levelled to form a ship-building yard. Recent redevelopment work allowed limited excavations of the site showing the original construction to have been made of Portland-Purbeck limestone. (1)
