Summary : Site of de Gomme's Hornwork South of Kings' Bastion. The hornwork was added to the vulnerable South-East corner of the town defences to give additional protection during de Gomme's defensive improvements 1677-85. It was elaborated with a 2-storey masonry redoubt in the re-entrant angle connected to the counterguard by a caponier, and was surrounded by a moat. After a period of decay, it was demolished and replaced by an earth rampart and covered way 1745-56. |
