More information : (NY 06902225) Dismantled Railway (NAT) (1) The Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway, later part of the London and North Western and Furness Joint Railway, was opened for mineral traffic shortly before it started carrying passengers in 1857, from the Mirehouse Junction with the Furness Railway (NX 9815) to Egremont (NY 0110), with a branch from Moor Row Junction (NY 0014) to Frizington (NY 0316). This branch reached Rowrah (NY 0518) in 1863 and Marron Junction (NY 0530) with the Cockermouth and Workington Railway in 1865. Subsequently a branch line was laid from Ullock (NY 0724) to the Furness Railway at Parton (NX 9821), the Ullock to Distington (NY 0024) section being under construction in 1876 (3). This branch appears to have closed to all services in 1931. Two other branch lines were built. The Eskett Branch which served the Agnes, Eskett and Margaret Iron Mines, and the Mowbray Branch which ran to the iron mines of Frizington Parks, Mowbray and New Parkside. They both left the main line at Eskett junction (NY 0415). Passengers were not carried after 1874 and goods traffic ceased in 1931. Many other iron mines and collieries along the main line were served by spur mineral lines (A mineral line shown on OS 1:50 000 1979 follows the course of the original main line from Mirehouse Junction to Rowrah with short deviations from it at Cleator Moor,NY 0115, and Frizington NY 0416).
