Monument Number 892369

Hob Uid: 892369
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Goltho, Bullington, Barlings, Apley, Newball
Grid Ref : TF0908073700
Summary : Apley Beck marks the course of a 12th century monastic canal linking Bullington Priory to the Barlings Eau.
More information : TF 09087370 to TF 09727517. Apley Beck marks the course of a
monastic canal serving Bullington Priory (TF 17 NW 4) and linking it
to the Barlings Eau from the end of the 12th century. It possibly
extends to the enclosure in Cocklode Wood, which abuts it, and that
site's function is related to this facility.

Throughout its lower course the waterway would have followed the edge
of large blocks of Medieval managed woodland - Newball Park Wood (now
cleared) and Hardy Gang Wood - on the Newball side. Where the
watercourse skirts the SE edge of Hardy Gang Wood, the pasture field
on the Apley side preserves a broad degraded bank flanking the stream
and mirroring the surviving boundary bank of the former Medieval
managed woodland on the Newball side. See also (TF 17 NW 5). (1)
