Excavations in 1963 in an area North of the NE corner of the Roman town, revealed a complex of pits and gullies containing layers of silt etc with C4th pottery. Overlying these was a layer of furnace or hypocaust debris with pottery of AD 180-305. The whole area was apparently used for the disposal of refuse from the town.(2)
According to its Scheduled Monument description, the site is identified as a roman fort with a later Saxon settlement. See the description for further details. (3) |
