Excavations at 59-61 Moulsham Street discovered timber buildings and a rampart and ditch of the 1st century A.D. which may be military in nature. Two defensive ditches belonging to the 2nd century earthworks forming the town defences were excavated. They had a short life.
A timber building constructed in the third century on the site of the backfilled ditches had been destroyed by fire.
Two pottery kilns opening from a single stoke pit were found and added to the 4th century - One jar from the kiln was distorted with moulded lions. (1,2)
