More information : Enclosure: SJ 4544 6687 (FCE). Situated on a very slight N-facing
slope at 22m OD is a ploughed-down rectangular enclosure measuring
110m SW-NE by 83m. The enclosure is defined by a low bank (maximum
0.2m high) and a shallow, narrow peripheral ditch; there is a
probable entrance at the E. No internal structures could be
identified. The enclosure has been over ploughed by two phases of
ridge and furrow. Of uncertain date and purpose but possibly an
enclosure of pre-medieval date surviving on heathland, or
alternatively having a specialised but later function within a
heathland setting (1a). A further enclosure has been identified
some 400m to the E (see NMR No: SJ 46 NE 21).
This summary is derived from a standard RCHME Level 3 survey
undertaken at a scale of 1:1000 in February 1986. The resultant
archive is held in the NMR. (1)
A rectangluar enclosure that may represent a Roman camp is visible as earthworks in lidar and aerial photographs in the parish of Christleton. The site is extant on the latest 2016 aerial imagery and was mapped as part of the Cheshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping Project. (2,3)
