Late 19th-20th century terraced gardens c.2 ha, situated below and around the house. Noted for the successful cultivation of succulents and other tender plants, normally glass house plants on mainland. Given to National Trust in 1954. Walled garden, 18th century, in separate use and ownership. (1)
Gardens were first documented during the mid 16th century and were replaced with walled and terraced gardens by the mid 18th century. Walled and terraced gardens were also constructed between 1876 and 1908, some have late 20th century replanting. Some of the gardens laid out during the 19th century were removed circa 1900. (2) |
