Summary : Stables and riding school to Stoneleigh Abbey. The stables were built in 1814, by Charles S Smith, and are D-shaped on plan with the stables in a half-circle to the north; the coach houses, tack room, feed stores and grooms' cottages along an east-west axis to the south around a cobbled courtyard. The main buildings are of red sandstone ashlar in Neo-Tudor style. The main entrance is on the west and consists of a two storey central section (with archway), flanked by single storey wings. There are projecting octagonal pilasters with turrets and embattled parapets. The riding school, constructed in 1820, also by Charles S Smith, is attached to the south of the stables and is also of red sandstone ashlar, of two storeys, with an embattled parapet and low pitched slate roof. There is an octagonal stair turret at the southwest end of the facade. |
