More information : (SP33567932) Priory Gate [NR].(1)
Priory Gate, also known as Swanswell Gate was built ca.1355. See GP.(2)
Depicted.(3)
Priory Gate is so-called in 1518, and 1748-9, (S Bradford's Plan of Coventry), but was known as the Swanswell Gate in the C19th. It is one of Coventry's two surviving gates, the other being Cook Street Gate, (SP37NW49), both being examples of lesser city gates. It is square in plan, projecting beyond the line of the city walls. It is similar to Cook Street Gate, but the archways were blocked, windows inserted, and the roof raised when it was converted for domestic use in the C19th. It was used as a shop when acquired for the city in 1931, when it was altered and restored.(4)
Swanswell Gate, ca.1395, and the city wall to the North of it, are listed, Grade I.(5)
