Summary : Gosford Gate, early C15th to 1765.
More information : (SP34177887) Gate (Site of) [NR].(1) Gosford Gate (site). Erected ca.1355, demolished in 1765.(2) Depicted.(3) Gosford Gate lay on the main exit to the East and was in existence by 1410-11. It was removed in 1765. It was rectangular, two-storeyed with its upper floor lit by pointed windows of one and two lights. There were two circular turrets at parapet level on its outer wall, and the former Chapel of St George, (SP37NW104) was attached to its NE corner.(4) (Forms part of Coventry City walls, SP37NW48.) (A sketch of the gate and the adjacent West end of St George's Chapel is produced in authy.5, but since the gate was demolished in 1765, 30 years before the author's birth, its authenticity is doubtful.)
