Summary : Collegiate and parish church 1107-1540, and parish church thereafter. College refounded in 1107 by Robert de Beaumont, Count of Meulon, probably on the site of a late Saxon minster reputedly destroyed in 1068. The new church was built on a cruciform plan. Despite being granted to the Abbey of Leicester in 1143, it continued as a collegiate and parish church. In the late 12th century the church was extended and the North and South chapels added. In the late 13th century all of the South side became a single aisle. The North aisle was added in the 19th century by Sir George Gilbert Scott. |
