Summary : Parish church built between 1250-80, restored in 1887-9 when the tower was also added. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof. Cruciform plan with north porch,and tower in north-east angle.
More information : (SJ 53350193) St Mary's Church (NAT) (1) This church, like the castle at Acton Burnell (SJ 50 SW 6), was built by Robert Burnell, Chancellor to Edward I and the Bishop of Bath and Wells. The church is earlier, stylistically, than the castle (2). Detailed description of the building. A date of c 1260-70 is proposed stylistic grounds. (3) Church of St Mary. Parish church. 1250-80, restored and tower added in 1887-9. Grade I (See list for details) (4).
