More information : [TA 20194730] CROSS [GT] (1) The cross in Southgate, Hornsea has been badly used: it is 8ft high. (2) This cross appears to be a composite of two different Md. crosses, the shafts of which have been 'restored' to form one complete column. The socket-stones of both crosses have been placed upon one another and the upper-stone used to carry the restored shaft. See GP AO/65/52/4. (3)
Wayside Cross, Southgate, probably 14th-century in date. White limestone. Stepped and chamfered base. The cross is 2.4m high and appears to be a composite of two different medieval crosses. The shafts have been `restored¿ to form one complete column. The socket-stones of both crosses have been placed upon one another and the upper-stone used to carry the restored shaft. Grade II listed.
