At the north end of the new Hydro a few years ago an area of about 12 yds by 4 yds was levelled to make a Bowling Green. 13 Skeletons were found, and finds included a silvered buckle, 2 pairs of strap fasteners of bronze, a silver pendant, a dagger, key etc of iron, perforated bone object, jet spindle whorl, half an ivory bracelet, and a necklace of 36 beads; also 3 plain earthenware vases. A bronze bell of the same date was found at the same time, but it is said to have been found in an adjoining garden. [The above is in accord with the siting on OS 25"] (3) A contemporary account of this discovery, dates it to the "summer of 1913", and verifies the OS 25in. siting. The finds are in Hull Museums. The site is now used as a car-park to the Granville Court Hotel, but is shortly to be re-developed. (4)

A contemporary account of this discovery dates it to the `summer of 1913¿ and verifies the Ordnance Survey 25in. siting. The finds are in Hull Museums. The site was subsequently used as a car-park to the Granville Court Hotel, but was re-developed. Further archaeological excavation was undertaken in 1982 (EHU92: HH 82), when 6 inhumations were found, and a watching brief in 1993 (EHU206: MAH 93). (6) |
