Location :
North East Lincolnshire

Summary : Surface finds of Roman and Anglo-Saxon pottery and animal bone found in areas of dark soil (presumably representing some sort of archaeological features) on the southern slope of Welbeck Hill. The Saxon pottery was said to be similar to the Early Saxon material recovered from a cemetery site elswhere at Welbeck Hill.
More information : TA 218040. A Roman grey ware dish and lug handle, also heavy
well-fired sherds and a cooking pot with a flat topped rim, were foundby Mr G Taylor in dark patches with much animal bone about 150 ft from the field edge at Irby. Mr Taylor has also found here hand-made pottery with mica showing on both surfaces, which compare closely with the pottery from the nearby Anglo Saxon cemetery site on Welbeck Hill. (TA20SW9). (1)

Mr G Taylor indicated that the finds made in 1966 came from an area
centred to TA 219040; all finds in his possession. (2)

TA 218040. Four dark patches revealed in the ploughsoil on the
southern slope of Welbeck Hill in 1966 yielded Roman and Anglo Saxon
sherds, some of the latter with stamped decoration; now in private
possession. (3)
