More information : TA 218040. A Roman grey ware dish and lug handle, also heavy well-fired sherds and a cooking pot with a flat topped rim, were foundby Mr G Taylor in dark patches with much animal bone about 150 ft from the field edge at Irby. Mr Taylor has also found here hand-made pottery with mica showing on both surfaces, which compare closely with the pottery from the nearby Anglo Saxon cemetery site on Welbeck Hill. (TA20SW9). (1) Mr G Taylor indicated that the finds made in 1966 came from an area centred to TA 219040; all finds in his possession. (2) TA 218040. Four dark patches revealed in the ploughsoil on the southern slope of Welbeck Hill in 1966 yielded Roman and Anglo Saxon sherds, some of the latter with stamped decoration; now in private possession.
